  • In 1152 Emperor Frederik Barbarossa built this giant fortress on the Valkhof. For more than 600 years the Donjon, the fortress tower, was the city's impressive and mighty distinguishing landmark.  In 1795, the structure was taken down to make cement.  Now there's a push to rebuild it.  This is a temporary life-sized one made of scaffolding.
